But They’re Acting Like It Is
The recent tragic slaughter in Parkland, Florida is yet another example of a nation that has lost its moorings. We’ve forgotten God! And yet we expect that we can still live under His protective hand. Seventeen dead; innocent and heroes. A shooter that heard what he called “demon voices” instruct him on how to carry out his crime.[i] And so he did. Was he alone? We’re not even quite sure of that. At least 2 student witnesses have come forward saying that there was at least one other shooter. [I know they could be mistaken. And I’m not saying there was. But let’s not close our minds to the pursuit of the truth.] One girl said that she was talking to Nikolas Cruz – [the shooter] – when the whole event started. Alexa Miednik: “As I was going down the stairs I heard a couple of shots fired, everyone was freaking out – there was a gun, and as we were walking – the whole class together – I actually was speaking to the ‘suspect.’” The original interview was given to a local Florida reporter from KHOU 11.[ii] But the mainstream media will not even entertain the discussion of this possibility. So we are back to the official narrative.
Instead the issue has become guns. What will we do to limit the access to guns? What new gun laws can we write? What impingement on the 2nd Amendment can we dream up to satisfy the cry of the outraged? JD Hall summarizes the problem nicely. For secularists, “the problem is the easy access to firearms. Like so many other mass shooters, this gunman chose as his weapon the most widely-owned rifle in America, the AR-15. It is a black, scary, and ominous looking rifle. For many, it doesn’t matter that this rifle has the same functionality as any semi-automatic rifle that is commonplace in more than forty million homes. It doesn’t matter, to many, that this carbine has no better functionality to kill than most hunting rifles. To those secularists, the problem isn’t that the gunman was evil; it’s that the gun itself was evil.”[iii] Their pain is very real. But the issue is not the guns. Laws and procedures were in place that if implemented would have put an end to this event before it even got started. This was a failure of the authorities. Specifically it was a failure of the FBI. Even they have been forced to admit this. Identifying Cruz as a potential threat should have been easy. But there was no follow up. If the protocols there would have been no shooting. It was just back on January 6 that the FBI had a tip that Cruz was expressing interest on social media in becoming a shooter. This information was passed along to the FBI….and then it just sat. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office too. They had been called out 30 times to Cruz’s home. If the information was properly entered into the system the shooter would never have been able to buy a gun. The LAWS WERE IN PLACE! The PROCEDURES WERE THERE TO BE FOLLOWED! This was human failure: A failure of the system!
I know of what I speak. I was a gunshot victim myself way back in the Pleistocene Era. There were four guns used in the holdup of the store I was in. The 38 that was used on me nicked my spine, cut the aorta and collapsed a lung. (God was with me that day!) That weapon and the other three were all illegal. It wasn’t that there weren’t enough gun laws on the books. They were not – or perhaps could not be enforced. Again, it was a failure of the human element in the system.
But the Parkland incident wasn’t the first systemic failure. The Orlando shooter was on the FBI’s radar for some time…but again the ball was dropped. It was the same for Dylan Roof, the Charleston Church shooter of a few years back. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System was improperly maintained and updated and Dylan walked away with a weapon….and into infamy. Again the architecture was there. The laws were in place. Again the human element in the system failed. It was the Air Force that failed in the Texas church shooting. They did not update the system as they were supposed to.[iv] It is not for lack of laws.
There is yet another common element that ties so many of these mass shootings together. It is the use of psychotropic drugs. Both the Orlando shooter and Major Hassan who shot up Fort Hood had links to psychiatric drugs.[v] Mike Adams of Natural News weighs in. “The mainstream media absolutely refuses to tell you the truth about the link between psychiatric drugs and violent killings, but it’s the obvious connection in nearly every single shooting that’s taken place in recent memory: The Virginia Tech shooting, the Stephen Kazmierczak Illinois shooting, the Omaha mall shooting, and so on.” SSRI drugs work “by disconnecting the brain from emotional reality.” The real life slaughter seems to them like a video game.[vi]
But the public angst will not concentrate on these real failures. Reality is not what the media is about. They are but a tool of the Deep State, the New World Order crowd. And so lip service will be paid to addressing the systemic failures. The common thread of psychotropic drugs will be nearly completely ignored. In their place their will be marches and protests and calls for more gun control….all when the laws on the books and the systems in place could have and should have dealt with the issue if properly acted upon.
The Left will wring its hands and wail for the innocent children slaughtered while offering nothing that will stop the carnage. While students rally against the violence, and most pointedly against guns themselves, no real solution is offered. The mainstream media has jumped on this latest tragedy to push their agenda of new gun control legislation, even allowing and leading some students to argue for a complete ban. But the students are not monolithic in this view. One interviewed senior argued that the media is politicizing the debate. “The media is specifically targeting those in support of gun control to make it seem as if they are the majority, and the liberal news outlets are the ones that seem to make the bigger effort to speak to these people, and I’m talking from experience.”[vii] The God of the Bible did not call on His people to stand defenseless against their enemies. Through His prophets, Yahweh often directed the Israelites to make war for both self-defense and in conquest of the Holy Land. Nehemiah 4 describes a situation where as the returned Israelites rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, some in their number took up arms to defend the workers. In Exodus 22:2-3, God lays out the principle of defense of both self and property – with the caveat that our response be restrained. “If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him, 3 but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him.” (ESV)
SO WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN ?
The gun control debate is one that has raged for decades. It will not soon go away. But when looking at the 2nd Amendment, we must understand the purpose the Founding Father’s had in drafting it. It was meant as a check against tyranny; specifically the potential tyranny of the newly forming Federal Government. Founders like George Mason considered the “well regulated militia” spoken of in the amendment to consist of the entire people. It was necessary that the people be armed to ‘dissuade’ the government from crossing lines it was constitutionally forbidden to cross. The ‘Revolutionary Generation’ had a knowledge and experience of the tyranny imposed, not only on the colonies, but also in Europe. When populations were disarmed, virtual enslavement followed. Daniel J Schultz writes for The Lectric Law Library. “Tench Coxe, an ally and correspondent of James Madison, described the Second Amendment’s overriding goal as a check upon the national government’s standing army: As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms.”[viii]
That tyranny follows disarmament of a population has been proven true by the historical experience of the 20th century. In a piece written for the National Institutes of Health, Miguel Faria Jr wrote: “Civilian disarmament has always preceded genocide in authoritarian and totalitarian states….Repressive governments that conducted genocide and mass killings of their own populations have first always disarmed their citizens.”[ix] This has resulted in mass murders, sometimes spanning decades that have killed an unfathomable number of deaths. The USSR took the lives of over 61 million of their own people. Mao’s China checked in at about 35 million. Nazi Germany; nearly 21 million. Japan of the 1930’s & 40s; close to 6 million. Add in Cambodia, Vietnam, Turkey, Poland and Pakistan with all over a million. And there are others.[x]
It is not the guns that drive this. It is the depravity of human nature. Man is hopelessly sinful. We are a fallen race prone to evil. Jeremiah 17:9 reads: “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” NO NEW LAW CAN PREVENT THE EVIL WRITTEN ON THE HEART! We need a transformation of our character. And that can only happen through Jesus Christ our Savior! We are a nation not in need of new laws. We are a nation in need of godly character. We are a nation in need of repentance; of turning and seeking the face of God. That the Lord God of Heaven may hear from heaven and heal our land. That He may fulfill that promise He made to His people – and ourselves by extension. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26) Only then will we become a nation transformed!
