No matter how impossible it looks, one day, peace will be declared in the Middle East. Israel will sign some agreement brokered by the coming Antichrist. Here is part of the relevant prophecy given to Daniel by the Angel Gabriel. “Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.” (Daniel 9:27) The signing of this covenant will likely signal the rebuilding of the Temple and the resumption of the OT sacrificial system. As we have covered in our recent series on the Third Temple, scripture tells us that in the middle of that seven-year agreement, the Antichrist will break the covenant by going into the Temple to declare that he is God. [See 2Thessalonians 2:4] And again, as we have recently seen, the rebuilding of this Temple is being contemplated and planned for right now. A significant portion of the religious community in Israel believes that it may be President Trump’s destiny to arrange to bring that about.
Which brings us to the unveiling of the coming peace plan. Every recent US president has taken up this issue – to little affect. But President Trump has promised a new approach. In true Trumpian fashion, he’s calling it “the deal of the century.” In the past, attempts were made to put in place a Two State Deal – one nation for Israel and one for the Palestinians. Though yet to be revealed, the Trump approach seems to be a One State Deal with limited sovereignty for the Palestinians – [a people, by the way, that was invented – by their own admission – as a political cudgel back in the 1960’s.] Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted at the direction of the plan, which will be revealed shortly after Ramadan ends in early June. It would “represent a significant change from the model that’s been used.” He told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: “I would argue that millions of man-hours have been spent to try and build out a two-state solution. It hasn’t worked to date.”[i]
The prime mover in formulating this peace process has been Jared Kushner, the President’s son-in-law. It is Kushner that has been doing the tough negotiating with the prime players such as Netanyahu and Abbas – as well as other major players in the region. He’s says the coming plan will “demand tough compromises” from both Israelis and Palestinians. The US will not just be offering some talking points for consideration but rather a “detailed proposal” – a plan of action.[ii] To get the Palestinians to agree the administration has enlisted the support of the Saudis as well Egypt’s President Sisi.[iii]
And though someday, a false and empty peace will be declared, we certainly cannot know whether this latest proposal will in any way play into it. Still, the language used by Jared Kushner offers an interesting prophetic parallel. “The two-state solution failed. New and different ways to reach peace must be tried.” His stated goals are to “make life better for the Palestinians” and “make Israel safer.” Students of prophecy may recognize the terms here. The Bible teaches that when the world is concerned with “peace and safety” – that’s when destruction comes. “But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.” (1Thessalonians 5:1-3)
