“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6)
I don’t quite know how to tell this story. It has been an amazing week. It seems half the world is gearing up for war – and that war might very well go nuclear. The set up comes with the somewhat successful Ukrainian counter attack that managed to gain some territory as Russian forces made a strategic withdrawal. The Russian response was a massive missile barrage against Ukrainian infrastructure such as power plants and water treatment plants. It blocked out a giant swath of Ukrainian controlled territory. Now, the West has managed to start some brush fires on Russia’s southern border.
- Azerbaijan, with economic ties to the West, attacked Armenia a Russian ally that Moscow is treaty-bound to defend. That means Russia will have to defend on that front.
- Georgia is actually going to have a referendum on whether it should go to war with Russia.
- Speaking of referendums, A
- A little background: The US and other Western powers in Ukrainian politics in 2014, setting off a revolution that drove the democratically elected president there to leave the country. Ukraine became a corruption filled cash cow for the Biden family and other politicians.
-
Starting in 2014, the Ukrainian military periodically attacked the ethnically Russian Ukrainians in Luhansk and Donetsk, collectively called the Donbass, resulting in about 14,000 civilian casualties. This is one of the reasons Putin launched his “Special Military Operation” in February 2022.
- The recent counter-attack by Ukrainian forces that saw the Ukrainians gain some ground, resulted in PUTIN CALLINIG FOR A “PARTIAL MOBILIZATION” OF RUSSIAN RESERVISTS – 300,000 in the first call. But it will be ongoing – and we can expect more to be called up.
- Putin announced that in a speech to the nation.
- In that speech, Putin said, “The West has crossed all lines.” Then noting that the West has said that nuclear weapons might be used against Russia in certain circumstance, he said this. “Russia has sophisticated weapons, many superior to the West, and Russia WILL USE THEM to protect itself. IF THERE IS A THREAT TO OUR COUNTRY WE WILL USE OUR NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY TO PROTECT US AND I AM NOT BLUFFING.”
- Defense Minister Shoigu followed Putin’s address saying that the 300,000 was just 1% of the reserves that number around 25 million. He went on to address some of the specifics of the situation.
- “Russia is at war with the collective West”
- “NATO SATELLITES ARE WORKING AGAINST RUSSIAN FORCES”
- “WE ARE WITNESSING STRIKES FROM WESTERN WEAPONS ON CIVILIANS”
- Russia’s casualties from ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine are 5,937 dead.
- Ukraine’s casualties are “more than 61,000 dead, more than 100,000 wounded; that’s half the country’s army.”[i]
- Prior to that China announced its’ support for Russia. Li Zhanshu, the #3 man in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) said this. “We see that the United States and its NATO allies are expanding their presence near the Russian borders, seriously threatening national security and the lives of Russian citizens….We fully understand the necessity of all the measures taken by Russia aimed at protecting its key interests….We are providing our assistance.”
- Some of that support was seen the next day in the form of a Chinese military convoy that was rolling through Ukraine.[ii]
-
North Korea is preparing a 100,000 man contingent both to lend military support and aid in the rebuilding of Ukraine.
- Following the mobilization announcement, people began fleeing Russia, heading for the Finnish border.
- Later, the government ordered all flights in and out of Moscow, cancelled.
- There was reaction to all these developments in Washington. On the afternoon of September 20th, Hal Turner was reporting that “high level” government operatives “stopped what they were doing, got up and left the city.” His source told him, “They went and got family, and left.”
- Other sources confirmed that “Very senior DoD people” left work early as did people at other agencies.[iii]
- The level of success in the recent Ukrainian Kharkiv and Kherson fronts has been reported variously. However, the conscription of 300,000 recruits in this round – and about 965,000 overall signals that Russia is wanting to end this thing quickly – or feels they are losing and are desperate to stop the bleeding.
-
Wagner, a Russian mercenary firm has been recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine where many of them were quickly captured by the Ukrainians. One source reported that the Russians were giving the former prisoners their worst equipment. “They usually drive these people to the front as bait.”[iv]
- Update: There are reports that say that men are being prevented from crossing Russia’s borders with Georgia and Finland but that women are allowed to pass. Social media postings say that Russian railroads and airlines are refusing to sell tickets to men 18-65 years of age.”
- Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council gave an even more severe warning than Putin himself. Here’s what he had to say.
- “Russia has announced that not only mobilization capabilities, but also any Russian weapons, including strategic nuclear weapons and weapons based on new principles, could be used for such protection.” Here is the seriousness of the situation
- “Ukrainian-held territories are now about to vote to join the Russian Federation.”
- “When these territories join Russian then they are “inside Russia.” They are Russian oblasts and attempts to defend (formerly) Ukrainian territory would then mark an invasion of Russian territory supported by NATO equipment.”
- This is “Medvedev’s warning of ‘willingness’ to use nukes covers these territories inside Ukraine.”[v]
-
Things are heating up elsewhere too. This one goes back a bit, to mid-August of this year. Faced with the possibility of another nuclear test by the North Koreans, the US and South Korea have sent out a warning. “Washington has said it will consider deploying to the Korean Peninsula strategic assets — which could mean anything from nuclear-powered submarines, strategic bombers or even tactical nuclear weapons.”[vi]
To understand just how serious this situation could be I want to take a look at the words of Alexander Dugin, who has been described as “Putin’s favorite Russian nationalist ideologue.” This provides us with the Russian perspective on the situation.
“We are on the brink of World War III, which the West is compulsively pushing for. And this is no longer a fear or expectation, it is a fact. Russia is at war with the collective West, with NATO and its allies….Whether it will come to the use of nuclear weapons is an open question. But the probability of a nuclear Armageddon grows by the day. It is quite clear, and many American military commanders (such as the former American commander in Europe Ben Hodges) openly declare it, that the West will not even be satisfied with our complete withdrawal from the territory of the former Ukraine, we will end up on our own soil…. The AFU’s counter-attack in the Kharkiv region is a direct attack by the West on Russia. Everyone knows that this offensive was organised, prepared and equipped by the US and NATO military command and took place under their direct supervision. It is not only the use of NATO military equipment, but also the direct involvement of Western aerospace intelligence, mercenaries and instructors. In the eyes of the West, this is the beginning of ‘our end.’”
And then comes the spiritual analysis. It is biting because it contains much in the way of truth. “At the heart of the global confrontation that has begun is the spiritual, religious aspect. Russia is at war with an anti-religious civilisation that fights God and overthrows the very foundations of spiritual and moral values: God, the Church, the family, gender, man…. the state, the family, the community. The modern West has abolished all this, replacing it with virtual reality, extreme individualism, the destruction of gender, universal surveillance, a totalitarian ‘abolition culture’, a post-truth society. Open Satanism and outright racism flourish in Ukraine, and the West only supports them. We are dealing with what the Orthodox elders call the ‘civilisation of the Antichrist’. Russia’s role is therefore to unite believers of different faiths in this decisive battle.”
Dugin goes on to implicate western values as producing a “civilization of antichrist.” Then he jumps to the conclusion that Russia, therefore, is fighting a holy war against it. It is hard to frame Putin as a representative of the Holy Might of God. But America and its’ European allies stand indicted of falling away from the righteous standards of Christianity which had previously served as the foundations of their cultures. We have thrown off standards that protected us from the degrading power of sin and embraced a freedom to choose whatever course that comes to mind. “Professing to be wise” we “became fools,” (Romans 1:22) and in the process adopted the one-time philosophy of Israel found in Judges 21:25. “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
