We saw last time how Europe’s post-modern ethic has caused it to sacrifice its cultural identity, allowing ennui and disinterest to color its politics. Increasing Middle Eastern immigration and a purposeful policy committed to the Arab position on most international issues has altered the once-dominant continent in the last 30 years or so. The nations of Europe now routinely take positions opposed to Israeli interests. Some countries have sold arms to terror sponsoring regimes. They blithely give a blind eye to the murder of civilians by Palestinian homicide bombers. They have made an economic / political bargain with Arabia and they tow-the-line faithfully. In their submission to that line, they have made Jerusalem and the Arab-Israeli conflict a central concern of their collective foreign policy.
A CUP OF TREMBLING
This policy did not arise out of a vacuum. Long proud Europe, was somewhat humbled by the state of affairs it faced in the post WWII political economy. It no longer remained a major player on the world stage, giving way instead to the Super Power rivalry between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Once proud France was especially humbled by the new reality. The French had fallen early and easily to the German war machine in 1940, before being redeemed through the efforts of the British and Americans. France’s post-war leader, Charles De Gaulle was determined that France should again hold its rightful place among the nations. Still no fool, he realized that it would take a united Europe to rival American and Soviet power. So the pro-Arab policy had its immediate antecedents in De Gaulle’s 1967 announcement that cooperation with the Arab world is the “…fundamental basis of our foreign policy.”[i] This was done in the wake of the Arabs defeat by Israel in the Six Day War. The Arab League was in need of allies. And France was acting from what it believed was a position of strength.
But the European dream was more than that. Envisioned, was a Euro-Arab Empire that would eventually dwarf American political and economic power. And it would be buttressed by shared hate for a common enemy; the historically reviled Jews. Recall, that for centuries prior to the Second World War, there was little tolerance for the native Jewish population. By 1974 this had become institutionalized in the European Arab Dialogue and the Parliamentary Association for Euro-Arab Cooperation. This latter, consisting of over 600 members is active in the general European Parliament as well as in the legislative bodies of the various European States. And it is driving European policy, – both foreign and domestic. Therein lies the explanation of unwavering European support for all of the numerous anti-Israeli resolutions voted in the General Assembly of the United Nations.[ii]
Now part of the pattern of support for Arab causes is the encouragement of more Arab immigration. This increased immigration has actually changed the demographics of countries like France, and therefore the politics of Old Europe. This in turn reinforces the trends that brought the immigration into being in the first place. In turn, it brings Europe’s perceived interests more in line with those of the Arab Street. The Islamic Factor has no strong rival here. European culture has become a wasteland of relativism and hyper-tolerance. It will in fact tolerate just about anything, including evil. That tolerance is extended to everything but Christian thought, with its strong sense of black and white, right and wrong.
So both the Arabs and their European allies, see the Palestinian Cause as the key to stability of the Middle East and hence the entire world. To these Europeans, creating a successful Palestinian State is the centerpiece necessary to secure world peace. Zechariah 12:2-3 reads; “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” The surrounding Arab nations as well as the European Community have indeed, become increasingly obsessed with the fate of Jerusalem and Israel. There have been proposals floated to make Jerusalem an international city, equally a home to the world’s three great religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Papacy itself has expressed approval of such an arrangement in agreements signed with the late terrorist -leader Yasser Arafat.[iii]
In their anti-Jewish obsession, the Euro-Arabists have been able to draw on various allies; all movements founded on hate. Their policies have drawn support from such diverse elements as communists, neo-Nazis, Jihadists and anti-Americans. Bat Ye’or argues that the ethic of this new Eurabia was birthed from the cult-like survivors of the Nazi-Arab cooperation of WWII. Whatever the cause, European actions, especially in France, Belgium and Spain, reflect the historical relationship between a triumphalist Muslim society and a subservient Christian one. This relationship, called Dhimmitude is defined in the Koran. Dhimmitude first appeared on the world scene during the Islamic conquests that preceded the Crusades. Islamic Law, or Sharia, clearly defines the proper relations between the religions. Islam must dominate. Europe is increasingly falling into a pattern of submitting its interests to the greater Islamic cause. Old Europe has sacrificed its values, self-interest and even its identity, – on an altar of economic greed and dreams of lost glory and power.
The Prophetic Outlook
Here are the prophetic implications. Now there are two major schools of thought on the rise of the Antichrist; – one stressing his European connections and ties to a revived Roman Empire (the EU) and the other his rise out of Islam. But they need not be mutually exclusive. In Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, (Daniel 2), it was the legs of the statue that represented Rome, the final world empire in its ancient and revived forms. If you remember, the Roman Empire was divided into Western & Eastern branches. The Eastern Empire took in all the lands that comprise the Islamic countries of the Middle East today. This new emerging Europe, (Eurabia if you will), could provide the possible reconciliation between those two prophetic views.
First, understand that the European Union is steadily moving toward a consolidation that will satisfy the prophetic requirements of that Revived Roman Empire. Daniel 2:41-43 reads: “Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. … so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. … they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.” It is the picture of a ‘confederation’, strong yet divided.
The Bible sees these last events of history from the view of Israel. Jerusalem is the center from which all his reckoned. And according to Scripture, the emerging European power is but one of four that will dominate global politics during the Last Days. Even now these powers are aligning themselves according to the prophetic template. Here is what the Bible presents.
- The Revived Roman Empire of Daniel 9
- Gog-Magog – Coming from the North, – The (Russian?-Turkish?) / Iranian / Islamic Alliance of Ezekiel 38-39
- Kings of the South – Africa / North Africa found in Daniel 11
- Kings of the East – China and allied Asian powers of Revelation 16 [iv]
Even now, Europe is moving toward becoming that prophesied Imperial power. The EU began to flex its military muscle in the aftermath of the Israeli / Hezbollah War, putting ground and naval forces into the Lebanese theater. In November of 2006 the European Parliament voted to dispatch a multinational force to Gaza in order to put pressure on Israel.[v] At the same time Spain, France and Italy were pushing a new Arab/Israeli Peace initiative.[vi] On the diplomatic front, the Deputy Secretary General of the UN foresees that soon the EU will speak with one voice at the United Nations. To the UN’s one-time Deputy Secretary General Mark Malloch Brown, this will be but the “thin end of the wedge” of a World organized on supra-national lines.[vii] We should not be surprised that such a development would align again with the Scriptural view of history.
Renowned prophecy scholar Dr Thomas Ice refers to the trend as “The Emerging Global Commuinity”, – and the EU is at the cutting edge. (Besides the expanding European Union, there are steps being taken toward a North American Union, with the Mexican Ambassador to the UN calling openly for such a union to be completed by 2014. And toward that end, the Bush Administration signed something called the Security and Prosperity Partnership with Mexico and Canada, setting up a ‘working group relationship’ that has as its goal a multi-national bureaucracy that could overrule the locally elected officials.[viii] [ix] [x] [xi]) That New World Order will be built on what Dr Ice describes as the “three major planks: economic trade, false religion and centralized government,” all described in Revelation 17 & 18.[xii] Now we all know they didn’t get the timing right on the formation of the NAU. Still their intentions remained the same and progress has gone forward, albeit more discreetly on building a unified continent as part of the Ten Kingdoms that will populate and dominate the Antichrist Empire during the Tribulation.
Now Europe’s role in all this is to morph into the Revived Roman Empire, – both Eastern and Western wings. The EU for its part has the goal of not just uniting Europe, but to serve as a “steppingstone for eventual governance by the Europeans.” An expert on the EU, Robert Congdon points out that through something called their “Neighborhood Policy”, its’ their eventual goal to “absorb the Middle East, Egypt and North Africa.” With “peace and prosperity” as their professed aim, they seek near-term expansion to 80 countries having a population of about 430 million.[xiii]
Now this dream of just a few years ago all seems crazy in the light of terror threats against Europe, filmed beheadings and ISIS / ISIL threats against the continent. Yet this is the published and professed aim of the Illuminati types. And it all aligns perfectly with prophecy. Yet Europe has consistently taken positions against Israel as reflected in UN votes condemning the Jewish state. The Arab half of that strange hybrid Eurabia already stands committed to its destruction. With the creation of a de facto Eurabian political entity are we getting a glimpse of the character that will inhabit the revived Roman Empire spoken of in Scripture? With its pro-Arab stands, there will be increasing pressure on Israel to make a peace that would create a hostile Palestinian state. That could well be the 7-year treaty spoken of in prophecy. As revealed in the passage of Zechariah quoted above, there will come a time when the whole world will stand against Israel. Judging from developments in Europe and the world; – That time may be soon at hand!
