We must always understand one thing. The chaos that has descended upon America and the West is the result of conscious choice. It is a self-inflicted wound. What CS Lewis wrote in A Pilgrim’s Regress can be applied to our fading culture today. “You don’t know the difference between what nature has meant for nourishment, and what it meant for garbage.” This self-inflicted wound we have sustained is the result of the moral confusion of an age that tries to justify every conceivable behavior and lifestyle. Case in point: Christ Church in Alexandria, VA, just across the river from our nation’s capital. George Washington worshiped there as a founding member when its doors were opened in 1773. Now he is no longer welcome.
The Board of Vestry there voted that a plaque honoring his presence must be taken down. George, it seems, is a bit too controversial. His presence – even if only in plaque form it seems, is “chasing away would-be parishioners.” A plate honoring another parishioner, Robert E Lee, will be removed at the same time. The church leadership felt that they “create a distraction in our worship space and may create an obstacle to our identity as a welcoming church.”[i] To get an idea what welcoming means, one need only visit their website where they boast their “First Same-Gender Blessing held at Christ Church” being held in April of 2013. [So with, what is it, 67 genders now, would that mean that they would have to have 67 variations of that particular liturgical rite? Mmmm! Just asking!] But the relegation of Washington and Lee to the ash-heap of history is part of the general deconstruction of Judeo-Christian-inspired traditional American values that has long been a cause célèbre of the Radical Left. “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3) (KJV) And as to the “welcoming” nature of this particular congregation: That means they are setting aside the clear pronouncements of God’s Law found in Leviticus 18, Leviticus 20 and Romans 1. Some will argue that ‘We are no longer under Old Testament Law.’ But that refers to the ceremonial law, which came to an end when Jesus fulfilled His priestly duty. It ended with the Cross. Jesus testified Himself: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:17-18)
But that is NOT ALL that Christ Church of Alexandria, a member of the Episcopal Church USA has up their sleeves these days. There is also the little matter of the Apostles Creed….or bastardization thereof. [Now this is rich!] At the end of a recent service, Rev Ann [Dizzy?] Gillespie read a modernized version of the Apostles Creed, challenging the congregation to consider its language. It is called a Womanists Apostles Creed, and it was penned by Sarah Moon, who for the record, identifies as a Lesbian Methodist.
“I believe in God, our Mother Bear, source of all being. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s wisdom made flesh, along with Sophia, the church, and all that live in wisdom. Born of the bad-ass womanist liberation theologian, Mary, suffered under the systems of oppression of this world, was crucified, died, and was buried, forever joining in solidarity with those murdered by Empire. On the third day, the women declared him risen; signifying God’s ‘No’ to oppression. He points to God our Mother Bear, who works in this world, calling for justice for the poor and oppressed. I believe in Sophia Spirit, Christ’s body, the church, the communion of saints, the grace to reject this world’s systems, hope for justice in the future, and renewed life everlasting. Amen.”
It seems we have reached that time that Paul wrote of in his Second Letter to Timothy. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2Timothy 4:3-4) “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first.” (2Thessalonians 2:3)
