THE KAVANAUGH THINGY (Opinion) – What we are witnessing here is nothing less than a political show trial – long on accusation and short on vitriol. If sexual assault was attempted it is a very serious matter. But Dr Ford has been unable to present any corroborative evidence to support her case. Those she named as witnesses deny the event ever happened. There is no date or approximate date provided. There is no alleged exact location. Yet in the court of public opinion the judge has been declared guilty and worthy of punishment. So gone is the presumption of innocence. That principle of being innocent until proven guilty is a sacred principle of the American jurisprudence system. It was enshrined in English Common Law, from which our laws descend. In was confirmed by the Supreme Court in the 1891 case: Coffin v United States, which states in part: “The principle that there is a presumption of innocence in favor of the accused is the undoubted law, axiomatic and elementary, and its enforcement lies at the foundation of the administration of our criminal law.”[i] This principle lies at the center of our legal framework, serving as a bulwark against the tyranny of the state. It must remain a principle we dare not trifle with. Yet instead, in the Kavanaugh case, we are told to convict based not on the evidence but rather on the seriousness of the accusation. Now even in the face his seventh FBI investigation that found no corroborating evidence supporting the charges against him, we are told to believe he is a serial sex-offender. Groups of women are accosting senators, demanding a ‘NO’ vote on confirmation, insisting that all women be believed just because they level a charge. Recall, Senator Ted Cruz and his wife were chased out of a restaurant not long ago be deranged leftists. And threats are part of the standard fare. Planned Parenthood chimed in with a tweet targeting lawmakers that vote to confirm. And one Georgetown professor offered this disgusting doggerel. “Look at thus chorus of entitled white men justifying a serial rapist’s arrogated entitlement. All of them deserve miserable deaths while feminists laugh as they take their last gasps. Bonus: we castrate their corpses and feed them to swine? Yes.” The university took no action against the professor. So there you have it! Guilty until proven innocent! That is a principle that stands justice on its head.
PRAY FOR INDONESIA – First an earthquake that triggered a tsunami. As I write this that death toll stands at 1,400 and is likely to rise from there. Cars, homes and whole villages were swallowed up. If that wasn’t enough it was followed by two volcanic eruptions from Mt Soputan. Despite the carnage at least one miracle story emerged. A Christian airline pilot was prompted by the Holy Spirit to take off early on the next leg of his flight, leaving from Palu Airport. He testified that it was the Holy Spirit that prompted him to move up his departure time, resulting in the saving of 140 lives. Captain Icoze Mafella managed to begin his take-off about 3 minutes earlier than scheduled. Breaking Christian News reported, “As they sped down the airstrip, the massive earthquake began to strike Palu and both pilots felt the plane sway noticeably to the left and right.” Mafella said, “If I had taken off three minutes later, I would not have been able to save the 140 passengers, because the asphalt on the landing strip was moving up and down like a curtain blowing in the wind.” His Muslim co-pilot was witness to this work of God’s Spirit.[ii] Please continue to pray for both the physical and spiritual relief of that nation.
