In September of 1938 British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain faced a dilemma. He wanted to avoid war with Hitler’s Germany at any cost. The Fuhrer was demanding that the Sudetenland, belonging to Czechoslovakia, be turned over to Germany. Britain …..and France had solid commitments to the Czech government to defend that country. But Chamberlain and his French counterpart did not think their countries were ready for war with Germany. So Neville Chamberlain gave in and acquiesced to the German occupation. He promised that this would guarantee “peace in our time.” It was a moment of grand appeasement ……and shame for the Great Britain and the West. Winston Churchill, long out of power at that time offered this prescient analysis of Chamberlain’s surrender. “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war.” By the next Spring Hitler had seized the rest of Czechoslovakia. And by September of 1939, Europe was thrown into a full-fledged war over German moves into Poland. Such a deal!
But Chamberlain’s agreement with Hitler seems a bargain when compared to the deal President Obama struck with Iran. Secretary Kerry gave the lie to the fiction that the administration was out to stop Iran from going nuclear. Kerry insisted the Iran nuclear agreement will make Israel safer and give the terror-sponsoring-Mad-Mullahs of Tehran “the opportunity to prove this is a peaceful program.”[i] [And I suppose that if they decide NOT to “prove this is a peaceful program,” it will give them the opportunity to hit Tel Aviv with an atomic ballistic missile. It’s one or the other. But just like the diminutive king in the film Shreck, that’s a chance that Secretary Kerry….and President Obama are “willing to take.”]
But one cannot see how this deal could possibly make Israel safer. To start with the sanctions against Iran are lifted. And while in theory it limits the amount of nuclear fuel the Iranians will be able to work with, it puts in place a rather squishy inspection protocol that allows for month-long delays for international teams wishing to get to the sites.[ii] That seems not much of an inspection requirement at all. Iran will get to keep its nuclear facilities including the underground complex at Fordow. As Daniel Greenfield points out in Front Page Magazine: “Obama’s $140 billion sanctions relief will flow into Iran’s weapons programs as Ayatollah Khamenei has ordered that ‘at least 5% of the public budget’ go to the military with a special emphasis on ‘missile technology’ for the terrorist state. One of the first items on Iran’s shopping list will be Russia’s S300 missile system to keep Israel or a future American administration from taking out Iran’s nuclear program.”[iii] Of course that may not even be necessary, as the Obama administration has warned off Israel in the past by threatening to shoot down Israeli planes that might be heading to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities without American approval.
Further, the embargo on conventional arms shipments to Iran will be lifted. This, as the government there continues to support committed anti-Israeli terror groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. This clause alone threatens not just Israel, but also the American strategic position in the Middle East. Sophisticated Russian and Chinese weapons will become more available to this terror-sponsoring regime. Charles Krauthammer points out: “The net effect of this capitulation will be not only to endanger our Middle East allies now under threat from Iran and its proxies, but to endanger our own naval forces in the Persian Gulf. Imagine how Iran’s acquisition of the most advanced anti-ship missiles would threaten our control over the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, waterways we have kept open for international commerce for a half-century.”[iv]
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pointed out the existential danger of the new reality. “The world is a much more dangerous place today than it was yesterday. The leading international powers have bet our collective future on a deal with the foremost sponsor of international terrorism. They’ve gambled that in ten years’ time, Iran’s terrorist regime will change while removing any incentive for it to do so. In fact, the deal gives Iran every incentive not to change. In the coming decade, the deal will reward Iran, the terrorist regime in Tehran, with hundreds of billions of dollars. This cash bonanza will fuel Iran’s terrorism worldwide, its aggression in the region and its efforts to destroy Israel, which are ongoing. Amazingly, this bad deal does not require Iran to cease its aggressive behavior in any way. And just last Friday, that aggression was on display for all to see. While the negotiators were closing the deal in Vienna, Iran’s supposedly moderate President chose to go to a rally in Tehran and at this rally, a frenzied mob burned American and Israeli flags and chanted ‘Death to America, Death to Israel!’ Now, this didn’t happen four years ago. It happened four days ago.”[v]
Iran’s support for terror, opposition to Israel and proxy war against Jews and Americans will continue unabated. That’s a guarantee. And the four Americans still held in Iran will remain prisoners until it suits the interests of the Islamic regime to release them. That includes Christian Pastor Saeed Abedini, held sentenced to eight years in prison in 20123 for aiding in the founding of Iranian home churches. [Obama was not even able to extract that from the negotiations. The deal will weaken the position of America and the West. It will exacerbate a nuclear arms race in the Middle East as nations like the Saudis scramble to hold on to the influence they have. And it will increase tensions between Sunni’s and Shiites and aid Tehran’s goal of regional hegemony. [But other than that, I suppose it’s not such a bad deal! Really Mr Obama!? Really, John Kerry!? Is this what passes for American foreign policy? But I suppose it goes in line with the President’s support of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab Spring and his other policies that aid and abet the forces of Radical Islam.]
Finally, and this is just an educated guess: This agreement will embolden Israel’s enemies, Iran’s proxies, Hezbollah, Hamas, Syria and other Arab entities surrounding Israel to eventually launch the prophetic Psalm 83 War. The Scripture speaks of an alliance of the inner-ring of Arab states that will come against Israel in the Last Days. They will come with one purpose; to destroy the State of Israel. “They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, And consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.’” (Psalm 83:3-4) The Psalm goes on, using the ancient names to designate exactly which nations will come against Israel in that day. This is the war that many prophecy scholars believe will kick-off the End Times’ schedule of events. It will, they believe, include the destruction of the City of Damascus written of in Isaiah 17:1 – as well as the complete destruction of the Palestinian entity described in the single chapter that comprises the Book of Obadiah….Such a deal!
