THE SHEMITAH – PART III

We’ve been working our way through the examples of just how the ancient principle of the Shemitah has manifested in history. We’ve seen how this seventh year financial Sabbath has marked both the year – and often the very day of the greatest financial collapses including the onset of the Great Depression, the Stock Market plunge that followed the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and the record setting Wall Street tumble of 2008. We are coming upon another ‘year of the Shemitah.’ What may it mean to our future?

THE NEXT SHEMITAH

Before we examine the implications the Shemitah may have for our future we should make ourselves aware of some amazing facts. Whether one thinks this whole Shemitah thing has merit – or is a monumental set of coincidences – it is good to understand just what happened. Recall that the Shemitah marks the end of a seven year cycle. That seven year cycle that ended September 29, 2008, began on September 17, 2001 – the very day of the crash of 2001 – which followed and was caused by the 9/11 terror attacks. So that seven year period began and ended with the two greatest stock crashes in history. Now recall that one of the meanings of the word Shemitah is ‘to let fall’ or ‘to crash’. Jonathan Cahn believes that this was the ‘letting fall’ of the American Economic Order. And fall it did – in quite the dramatic fashion. As the sun went down on September 29, 2008, it was the beginning of the Hebrew month of Tishri. Congress had just rejected a $700 billion bailout plan. This was followed immediately by a 7% fall in the Dow Jones average – representing exactly a 777 point drop. All of this occurring on exactly the final day of the 7th year, the actual day of the Shemitah. In fact the crash happened to the very minute, the very second of Shemitah.

That was the past! While Rabbi Cahn sees it as a warning to America, he is careful to make certain that we know that the Shemitah does not bring judgment each and every time. As he puts it: “God does not have to do anything.” However, by its actions and its interests, this nation is steadily moving toward judgment. Now the next Shemitah year began September 25, 2014. It is usual that not very much happens at the beginning – but that it gathers momentum as the year draws to a close. According to the Hebrew calendar, the Shemitah will end on Elul 29 – or September 13, 2015. Now the last time solar eclipse happened on Elul 29, it marked greatest wipe out of wealth in history up to that point (1987).

Jonathan Cahn shared his opinion on what this may all mean on the Sid Roth Show at the beginning of September. He believes a great shakng is coming to America ……economic / financial …….and more, “something like a famine in the land.” It will be marked by a breakdown in services and infrastructure. “It’s in God’s mercy. Because I believe at this point, without shaking, I don’t think there can be revival. God’s heart is revival….Anything that can be shaken will be shaken.” He concluded that appearance with these facts. Seven Shemitahs represent 49 years and are followed by a Year of Jubilee; marking a time of restoration. 2000 years ago, Israel lost its inheritance. The restoration started in 1917, during the Great War, when the Balfour Declaration declared the intention of restoring Israel back to the land, creating a homeland for the Jews. One Jubilee later leads us to 1967. That marked the restoration of Jerusalem, occurring right after the year of the Shemitah. Seven Shemitah’s later takes us to 1916; right after the year of the Shemitah. Though he is careful to insist that he is not predicting anything, it naturally begs the question: What might that bring?[i]

America is indeed hurtling toward judgment. President Lincoln expressed that sentiment during the trying days of the Civil War. In one proclamation calling for a Day of National Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer, Lincoln wrote: “And, insomuch as we know that by His Divine Law nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us![ii]

2Chronicles 7:19-20 confirms that divine principle. “But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them, then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.” America has indeed served other gods. America has forsaken God’s Law and turned from His commandments. Yet still there is hope.          Yes, we’ve seen the foreshadowing of an end to the American-led Global Order ….but whether that comes or not ….it is not the end of things …..There is always God’s promise …. “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven…. then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2Chronicles 7:14) That is Our Challenge. Lord God, may we humble ourselves… May we dedicate ourselves to Your purposes… Father, we come as Your children. In the name of Jesus our Messiah….Lord, heal our land.
