By a vote of 161 to 5, the United Nation’s General Assembly called upon Israel – in the words of the AP – “to renounce possession of nuclear weapons and put its nuclear facilities under international oversight.” The US and Canada were among the five that stood with Israel. The nations of the world would have Israel trust its security to the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East guaranteed by the UN.[i] In the meantime, pressure continues to mount against Israel to allow the establishment of a Palestinian State. Belgium has already recognized Palestine and several other countries, including Slovenia, Portugal, Denmark, France are poised to do so. Even the United States is considering turning the tables on Israel. The Washington Free Beacon is reporting that “the White House is considering imposing sanctions on Israel for continuing construction on Jewish homes in Jerusalem.” These were discussed at “secret internal meetings.” The White House and the State Department have refused to confirm or deny these reports. At the same time, President Obama is considering lifting the sanctions on Iran.[ii] While all this is going on, Netanyahu has called for new elections to strengthen his hand. That, however, may have been a miscalculation. The Jerusalem Post reports that polls are showing that 60% of Israeli voters want to see an end to the Netanyahu government.[iii]
This brings to mind the words of the prophet Zechariah. “And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” (Zechariah 12:3) We are witnessing the prelude to those days.
