They prattle on about the “hate” he spoke. They know nothing of what he really said. They accuse him of bigotry and racism. While he reinforced the truths that Jesus taught. They demand we recognize the illogical, the unnatural, the unscientific and provably false while he talked of purpose and courage and love. They embrace the incomprehensible. The martyr has fallen. Not so much a political icon as one that based his entire philosophy – and dedicated the sum of his life to the supremacy of Jesus the Christ.
I find it hard to digest the aftermath. I attended a vigil for Charlie held in downtown Buffalo this week. It was filled with love and purpose and a commitment to the Lordship of Jesus, principles that Charlie would have supported. In the background we could hear the rattling and railing of the “counter protestors.” They revved engines. Sometimes our security scrambled to head off – what to us – were unseen threats. And the inspired words of Ephesians were demonstrated before us. Not just in the mob that wanted to disrupt the vigil, but also in the social commentators and professors and talk show hosts that decided to get in this game. These aren’t fully human agents we are facing. There is a splitting of the nation. It is becoming abundantly clear. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
We can see this is so. Charlie’s murder was followed by celebration and mockery. This has been a long-time in the making. The normal is dismissed and ridiculed. There is a war on sanity. Their message is that he deserved to die. This deviant culture did not just spring up. It has been a long time in the making. A demonic energy has been unleashed that has created the foundation for this societal cancer. Sometimes it has been overt. Two days before his death, Jezebel.com, a group of witches, cast a spell on the life of Charlie Kirk. Author Stephen King lied when he wrote that Kirk wanted to stone gays. [He had to back it off….because he was being cancelled by booksellers….But that is the zeitgeist of the moment.] All of this did not happen in a vacuum. Over the last several decades, God has been removed from the public square, from the classroom and the courthouse and the legislature. Even the Democrats in Congress refused to cooperate for just a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk. And it is the spiritual that gave birth to the political. This is an example of Demonic Energy gathering in its acolytes while at the same time inspiring a Spiritual Revival.[i] Jesus Christ is being celebrated across the land. Since the Kirk’s murder, tens of thousands of new Turning Point chapters have sprung up.
The whole thing reeks of ritual Satanism. The assassination filmed – broadcast live – a human sacrifice – a message to the righteous – a religious event. And then the celebrations of death and unending mockery. And the chasm is widening between God’s called and those that refuse to believe. In a couple of his recent teachings, Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, talked of two principles that are manifesting right now. The Gray is disappearing. There is no middle. People are drifting to either one side or the other. The second principle is this. God’s timeline is coming full circle. The spirits are returning to an empty house. We have tossed God out of society… out of culture….and the Enemy is taking advantage of the absence. Western Civilization had exorcised those demons centuries before when it became Christianized and chased out the demons pretending to be pagan gods. But in the 20th century we abandoned God, abandoned faith – and we paid – and are paying the price. Jesus explains how this works in Matthew 12. “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12:43-45)
We have allowed our culture to empty itself of God. And so, the empty house has been filled with the demonic. The movement simmered before that, but it really came to life in the 1960’s, bringing in its’ hedonistic, drug-laced norms, shredding tradition and faith and family. They were tearing down to rebuild. It was Marxist-driven and it still is. It clothed itself in the false-robes of love and peace. Instead, it brought something else entirely. Writing in The American Thinker, J Robert Smith, described it thus. “The counterculture’s early champions declared that they wanted a society guided by love, peace, and harmony. Instead, we saw the counterculture devolve into violence — campus riots, the Chicago Democrat convention riots in 1968 (remember the Chicago 7?), the Weather Underground and Symbionese Liberation Army, the Black Panthers, spiraling drug abuse and addictions, climbing rates of STDS, broken relationships, fatherless children. Anger, resentment, and score settling for real — or more often, imagined — wrongs replaced the hype about love and peace.”[ii] And so it has continued to this day. Recall the ANTIFA / BLM riots of the COVID era.
The remarkable thing about all of this is that it is sparking a revival in the nation, both on college campuses and elsewhere. People are coming to faith. Vigils are being held. Many are being saved – repenting and dedicating their lives to Christ. Last Sunday, at my church, the God was a palpable presence. That bullet has unleashed a Holy Spirit firestorm. As Genesis 50:20 reads: “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result.” (NASB)
