“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed.” (2Thessalonians 2:3)
Pope Francis has declared that the Roman Catholic Church will begin blessing same-sex unions. To the world at large, to the culture, this no doubt seems to be a small and natural thing. An inevitable and necessary evolution. But it is something much more than that. It is doctrine shattering. It represents a complete departure from biblical principles – not to mention stated Catholic doctrine.
Significant elements of the church had already been drifting that way. This past Christmas, an Italian church set up an LGBT nativity scene. There was no Joseph, just two mothers, one draped in rainbow-colored robes. A small thing, but a sign of where the culture – and the Roman Church is heading under Francis. But the move to bless same-sex couples signals a sea change in doctrine. The official position of Catholicism has been that homosexual relationships were “intrinsically disordered.” It defines such behavior as “sexual immorality” and “grave depravity.” It is said the Church “cannot bless sin.” Yet now they will.
Pope Francis justifies this by saying it is all about inclusion and progressing. But toward what? Is it progress to move toward what is “intrinsically disordered” or “contrary to natural law.” This is nothing less than grave apostasy. Apostasy is defined as “the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief.” Catholicism has held a certain set of beliefs regarding homosexual relations. It is now abandoning those beliefs and blessing what they formerly defined as sin. What’s more, according to the scripture quoted above, it is this “falling away” or apostasy that will open the door for the rise of Antichrist.[i] This is just a step in that direction. However, it signals an abandonment of scriptural authority. This, it seems has been encouraged by the Pontiff. He has, for instance, argued against “rigidity” vis-à-vis the Decalogue or Ten Commandments. Pope Francis: “I always try to understand what’s behind people who are too young to have seen Moses walk down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments, and yet still they want to obey them. Sometimes I find myself confronted with a very legalistic person who follows the Commandments and I ask myself, ‘Why so much rigidity?’ This rigidity in following the Commandments always hides something, insecurity or even something else.” And then he makes this astounding statement that almost mirrors New Age doctrine. “God gives us the freedom to search our own consciences for commandments.”[ii] And by this, anything can be justified.
The Pope was not done. “Let us remain vigilant against rigid ideological positions from the word of God, under the guise of good intentions. Holding to such positions separate us from reality and prevent us from moving forward.” As Jonathan Cahn points out, where is this “moving forward” taking us. The course he is setting is taking us away from the Truth found in the Word of God and into the acceptance of what the Bible calls sin. He goes on. “We are called out instead to set out and journey like the Magi, following the light that always desires to lead us on at times along unexplored paths and new roads.” Again: What new roads? The Magi were pagans. And that is of course, where our culture is heading right now. The Queering of the Culture is undermining biblical morality which has served as the basis for all of Western Culture. And the war against the culture, that has become so evident, is a war against Western Culture and by extension, against Christianity and the Christian. In all of this we would do well to remember this scripture. “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1Corinthians 6:9-10) That is “the unrighteous” as defined by God, in the Bible. Not the unrighteous defined by Pope Francis.
